OpenAI API spending cap: Yes
Does OpenAI API have a hard spending cap?
Yes Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: OpenAI documents a hard spend limit for an organization or an individual project, separate from spend alerts.
How do I turn on a spending limit in OpenAI API?
- Open the OpenAI API platform dashboard settings for your organization (or a specific project).
- Go to the spend limits / billing limits area described in the Spend limits guide.
- Add a spend alert if you only want notifications.
- Set a hard spend limit at the organization or project level to stop traffic once tracked spend reaches the amount.
What happens when the OpenAI API limit is hit?
Per the docs, affected API requests return a 429 error with the code organization_spend_limit_exceeded or project_spend_limit_exceeded. Spend alerts only notify; API traffic continues.
Gotchas
- Docs: “Enforcement is not instantaneous, so recorded spend can slightly exceed the configured amount.”
- Docs warn hard spend limits can interrupt production traffic.
- OpenAI also sets an approved monthly usage limit per usage tier (e.g. $100/month Free, $500/month Build, $5,000/month Launch); this is separate from limits you configure.
- Exact console click-path was not verifiable from the help center (returned HTTP 403 to our fetcher); follow the official guide.
