Google Cloud (general) spending cap: Partial
Does Google Cloud (general) have a hard spending cap?
Partial Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: Standard Cloud Billing budgets only alert. A true stop requires a DIY automation that disables billing on the project, which Google warns can irreversibly delete resources.
How do I turn on a spending limit in Google Cloud (general)?
- Create a budget in Cloud Billing (alerts only by default).
- For a hard stop, follow Google's “Disable billing usage with notifications” tutorial: budget → Pub/Sub notification → function that disables billing on the project.
- Test it on a non-production project first.
What happens when the Google Cloud (general) limit is hit?
Budgets alone: nothing stops. With the disable-billing automation: all Google Cloud services in the project are terminated, including Free Tier services.
Gotchas
- Google's warning: removing billing shuts down all resources; “Resources might be irretrievably deleted” and recovery is not guaranteed.
- Notifications have latency, so costs can continue past the threshold.
- Firebase spend caps (see Firebase page) cover only select services.
