GitHub Actions / Codespaces spending cap: Yes
Does GitHub Actions / Codespaces have a hard spending cap?
Yes Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: GitHub budgets can block additional usage when the budget is exhausted via “Stop usage when budget limit is reached”.
How do I turn on a spending limit in GitHub Actions / Codespaces?
- Billing and licensing > Budgets and alerts > New budget.
- Choose product (e.g. Actions or Codespaces), scope, and amount.
- Select “Stop usage when budget limit is reached” if available.
What happens when the GitHub Actions / Codespaces limit is hit?
Additional usage is blocked. If any applicable budget with the stop option is exhausted, usage is blocked even if other budgets have room.
Gotchas
- If you don't select the stop option you only get email notifications.
- Overlapping budgets (product vs SKU, org vs repo) can block usage unexpectedly.
